Well, first of all, I want to say, this is a common worry not just during the time of COVID-19, but more in general when people think about considering therapy for themselves. I want to tell you first of all, that most people won't even know if you choose to go to therapy or not, because therapy is confidential. You don't have to tell anyone about your private matters. It will be up to you to disclose whether you let anyone know that you're seeking help.
Then I would actually hope that in this day and age, when a lot of people are struggling, people will find out you're actually seeking help would actually judge you positively for it, and see it as a sign of strength and courage to be able to say, maybe I need a little bit of help here. And then inevitably, there may be a person or two, even in this day and age, who will judge you negatively for seeking help. The challenge there, is to see that as more about those people than yourself. The most important thing is, you'll be getting the help you need.
One of the things that I'm commonly asked is that, why do I need help when everybody else seems to be handling the COVID-19 crisis on their own? And this stems from a common myth about mental health in general, in which people often think they're the only ones struggling when everybody else seems to have it all together. A large part of this is because we can't actually see mental health symptoms like you can something like a medical illness or a physical injury.
I'm going to tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. Mental health issues are real and they're common. And if anything, during this crisis, they're more prevalent than ever. So what I would say, is that you should judge for yourself whether this is a time when you seem to be struggling more than usual. And if so, understand that it's perfectly fine to seek some help.
