Staying active and exercising are very important for both your physical and your emotional well being. Many research studies find that keeping your body active each day, reduces anxiety and depression and can boost your immune system. But during this public health crisis it could be harder than usual to stay active. As of the time of this filming, gyms, rec centers, basketball courts, they're all closed. And we're being told to stay mostly inside and socially distance from the friends that we may enjoy playing sports and exercising with. But there are still ways that you can stay active and healthy, even during a pandemic. There are many workouts that you can find online, that you can do at home without any equipment. Find a type of exercise that feels right for you. Do you prefer walking or running in place, yoga, working on certain muscle groups through sit ups, push ups, squats? Do you enjoy dancing to music? As long as you're working hard enough to quicken your breathing and elevate your heart rate, you're gonna get the benefits. Starting to pace and for an amount of time, that's a little challenging, but not overly difficult. If you're working at that pace, even a few minutes of exercise, can start to improve your physical and emotional well being. It can be helpful to get outside for some of your exercise, in a safe, socially distanced way. Going outside during the day, helps you get some vitamin D from sunlight and makes it easier to go to sleep at night. Try walking or jogging, bike riding, skateboarding, any activity that gets you moving outside. Now while you're getting your exercise, try to limit things that can interrupt you. You may wanna put your phone on airplane mode so you won't be tempted to stop and check social media when you hear notifications. Instead, try listening to music or favorite podcast. Now, as with any new activity that you wanna put into your daily routine, it's really important to schedule a certain time for it to happen. So you don't keep pushing it off. And it's also important to set an alarm, to remind yourself as to when it's time. Exercising together with a friend, can also be a great motivator. See if there's anyone that you're living with who's interested to exercise with you, or use apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, to exercise together with a friend virtually. Finally beyond exercise, try to limit the amount of time that you're sitting at home. Consider standing up while you watch that favorite show. You can pace and get some steps, and while talking with a friend or loved one on the phone. Stay active as much as you can to boost your physical and emotional health. And be kind to yourself as well. Some days are gonna be more difficult than others, during this really stressful time. Just try to do the best you can.
